Ok, so this is saying that -5 times x is -30.. Right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x is what we call a dummy variable here. - 5 x = - 30 is the same as -5 & = -30 or -5 $ = -30, it's the same as asking, what number times -5 is - 30.
x = 6
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i got x=25
is that right
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No, what number times -5 is - 30. You have to divide - 30 by -5 .

No. The trick with the equations is the idea that you can do something to both sides and maintain the equality.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x = 6
- 5 * 6 = -30
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So if you (for example) divide both sides by 5 what happens?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
What is \[-5x \div 5 ?\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok! -1
