All the equations seem to have an amplitude of 1, so you can write them all in vertex form as y = ±(x - h)² + k. Just find the vertex (the point where it turns around (h,k) and plug that in, then put a + in front if it's a 'smile' or a - in front if it's a frown.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm.....well, sorry i dont get it. Im so sorry!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you see at the points (-4,0) and (-1,9) that there are parabolas there that turn around? they have a hump either facing up or down?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you show me an example! Just 1 example! Please!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I'm trying to do. Look at the picture, do you see the vertex of each parabola? I just gave you 2 coordinates where vertices occur. Do you understand what the vertex of a parabola is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup, but i thought it is -7,9 & -2,9 & 5,9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because they all are parabola! bt -4,0 is not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The middle one is (-1,9), not -2. Also, notice the 2 vertices on the bottom.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-4,0) is the vertex of another parabola, which is facing upwards, as well as (2,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see so i get what is parabola now but how can those things make up an equation??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, the equation for a parabola can be written in vertex form, which uses the point you just found, the vertex, generally written as (h,k) in the equation y = (x - h)² + k. Basically, you just plug the numbers in.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the parabola at (-4,0), you would find the equation to be y = +(x - (-4))² + 0 ... i.e. y = (x + 4)² It's positive because it's facing upwards

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The positive in front, I mean.

I see I get it now..Thanks you so much!
