That is true. Mechanical waves (sound) are always longitudinal waves (same direction of vibration as direction of travel) in a gas, cause the intermolecular forces are far too weak for transverse waves (they are still too weak in a liquid btw).. That's 'cause the distance between to molecules in a gas is HUUUUGE. So soundwaves are always waves of alternating pressure in air for example - they are also called "compressional waves", i think...
