pls help: Write an experiment to show the release of hydrogen with a pop sound when an acid reacts with a metal . pls help it is urgent. i have to submit my work
For this you will need the following apparatus: + 100ml Conical Flask + Delivery tube with a rubber bung to allow the gas to be collected. + Boiling Tube + Bowl of water + Clamps/Stands + Metal (Magnesium) + Acid (Hydrochloric, about 1M) First of all, fill the bowl and boiling tube with water. Then, carefully place the boiling tube in the bowl so that the water stays inside. Take your delivery tube and put it so that the end without the rubber bung is under the entrance to the boiling tube. You might want to use clamps to keep this all in place. What you are going to do is put the acid into the conical flask and add the metal. Then, quickly place the end of the delivery tube with the rubber bung in the top of the flask as quickly as possible so that you can collect enough gas. The reaction for this example would be: 2Mg + 2HCl --> 2MgCl + H2 As the magnesium reacts with the HCl, it releases H2 which travels along the delivery tube and displaces the water in the boiling tube. Once its full (or the reaction comes to a stop), all you need to do is put your thumb over the end and take it out of the water. Take a lit splint and hold it at the opening and you should hear the famous squeaky pop! You may notice some water or steam at the bottom of the tube once you've lit it. This will have been created due to Hydrogen burning in the presence of Oxygen. A very exothermic reaction. 2H2 + O2 --> 2H2O
