Okay, so start by just picking one of your equation and solve it for one of the variables. For example: a = b-5 This one is already how we want it written. a is isolated on one side of the variable. Now substitute b-5 for a in the other equation. a*b = 24 and a = b-5, so (b-5)*b = 24
So (b-5)*b = 24 b^2 - 5b =24 b^2 - 5b -24 = 0 Use the quadratic formula to solve for b. Plug the answer into b in the equation a=b-5 to get the answer for a.
