|7-i|=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

need help

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|7-i| = sqrt(7^2+1^2)=sqrt(49+1)=sqrt(50)=sqrt(25*2)=sqrt(25)*sqrt(2)=5*sqrt(2) So |7-i| =5*sqrt(2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i in this case is 1?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Oops made a slight typo (but the answer is still the same) In the case of finding, |a+bi|, we simply use the formula |a+bi| = sqrt(a^2+b^2) In your case, a = 7 and b = -1 But notice how 1^2 = (-1)^2 = 1. So the typo did not affect the answer So it should really be |7-i| = sqrt(7^2+(-1)^2)

ah ok I understand now. Thanks
