ok first step u factor the numerator and the denominator which becomes (x+3)(x-1) /(x-1)(x+1) and then simplify x-1 with x-1 so the answer is (x+3)/x+1

Actually, how do you know that \[(x ^{2}-1) \] is not written as (x-1)(x-1) but it is written as (x-1)(x+1) ?

YES x^2-1 is (x-1)(x+1)

yes i know, but why can we not write it as (x-1)(x-1)..what is the rule for it?

oh okay the rule is (a^2-b^2) =( a-b)(a+b)
