this might be an inane question for some but we know polymerase are proteins but where did the first polymerase come frm if indeed you need polymerase to make protein...and dnt say frm ur parents genes cause you also need a "polymerase" to transcribe the gene for that protein so where did that "polymerase" come frm. or is that one of nature's free gift to you(humans)

Hmmm.. chicken or the egg? :P Nah, I don't really know. I suppose the first one would have been a result of the 'primordial soup' where the first organism formed. I think the idea is that some chance molecules got together by chance and slowly formed an organism and indeed polymerases.

While that is true I believe they have done simulations that show the spontaneous formation of biologically useful compounds in conditions similar to that of the 'primordial soup' and given enough time the idea is that complex interactions/molecules can form. Am trying to find some examples online :)

well explained..i have read the article on the biopoesis theory......its funny though how protein created the first organism but dna is the true source of life

thanks, indeed it its, I remember my lecturer saying that the meaning of life is the propagation of DNA somehow suggesting that DNA is an organism itself and life is really just the way it propagates.

well i guess dna is the first molecule...it has to be..not protein...dna gave birth to the first microbe

There's a theory called the "RNA world" that says that in the beginning, everything was made out of RNA.... the genes were stored as RNA, transcribed into RNA, which formed 3-dimensional RNA structures that performed functions (before proteins existed!) ... think of ribosomes which still contain RNA components and are some of the most evolutionarily conserved things in life... it could be that at one time, hundreds of millions of years ago (billions??) all "protein" functions were actually performed by globular RNA molecules. Look it up, it is quite interesting.... and good question!!
