Why is a more negative enthalphy change more stable? What exactly is stability in chemistry term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Stability in chemical terms is the point of lowest energy that a compound can achieve. So the more negative the enthalpy change is, the more energy is being freed by the reaction, the less energy the compound has in the end, the more stable it is.

think of a bond in chemistry as two magnets. one sides a + and one sides a -. well we all know what happens when we put a + to a + it repels. thats kind of like a + enthalpy change. but its really easy to break the + to + magnets so that would be a - enthalpy change. also a negative enthalpy change would be like a + and a - end of a magnet coming together. this is the lei-man term of enthalpy
