can someone help me with this? Evaluate D(x) = 4x^10 + 6x^8-8x^7-2x^5-2x^4-7x^2+5 for x+ -1. How do I start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure there isnt a typo, perhaps you meant evaluat for x=-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I typed the problem like it is on my packet. However, I do know the answer is supposed to be 16. Does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answe is 16 then the question read evluate the function at x=-1

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

is that x=-1 ? if the exponent is even it becomes positive 1 if odd becomes negative 1, so just switch the sign of coefficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

recall that \[(-1)^n=1\] if n is even and \[(-1)^n=-1\] if n is odd. then you will have an easier time of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is how it should look, then just evluate this: d(-1) = 4(-1)^10 + 6(-1)^8 - 8(-1)^7 - 2(-1)^5 - 2(-1)^4 - 7(-1)^2 + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry. typo. yes, it's x= -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!!!! got it!!
