That's the definition: The number of ways you can permute 3 items from a set of 14 items. \[P(n,k) = \frac{n!}{(n-k)!}\] For the first position you have 14 options. For the next you have 13, for the next you have 12. \[14 * 13 * 12 = \frac{14!}{11!} = \frac{14!}{(14-3)!}\]
