how exactly does an atom look like ?

No one has ever seen an atom, since it's size cannot be seen by any tool invented thus far. Though, through multiple experiments by Ernest Rutherford and his Gold Foil Experiment, we can interpret that an atom is much like the shape of a sphere. At the center of the sphere is the nucleus (where all the protons and neutrons are located). The electrons are located outside of the nucleus and surround the nucleus every which way. Most of the atom is "empty space" which means that electrons are spaced far apart from each other making it difficult to hit with a particle beam (as proved in Rutherford's experiments).
