OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Why isn't a number with -ve exponent isn't a Polynomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because v is a variable?

hero (hero):

double negative sentence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

har har

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Because polynomials are in the form \[\Large a_{n}x^{n}+a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+\cdots+a_2x^2+a_1x^1+a_0x^0\] where n is a positive integer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it does not follow the definintion of polynomial

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

so what's the defination?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

definition*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

definition of polynomial add subtract and raise to non-negative powers

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the definition is stated above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly

hero (hero):

Who's the fastest calculator/computer? Myininaya or Jim Thompson?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

jim, can you please explain that?

myininaya (myininaya):

jim

hero (hero):

Yeah, it's jim.

myininaya (myininaya):

where n is a positive integer and n>n-1>n-2>....>...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plus jim thompson writes better novels. pop 1280 among the best

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

a monomial is simply a coefficient times a power of x (where the power is some whole number) a polynomial is the sum of a collection of monomials

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

That answer should get more GOOD ANSWER^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

polynomials contain variables to constant powers. For example: \[X^{6}+X^{2}+X^{100}+X^{3}\] Constants to variable powers are NOT polynomials For example, \[2^{X}+2^{4X}+2^{Y}\] is NOT a polynomial. a number with "-ve" as an exponent is not a polynomial because "v" is a variable.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

he meant -ve as "negative", never seen that shorthand, but I'm sure it'll catch on someday....

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

lol.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Thanks Helpers! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

never saw -ve before saifoo maybe he invented it?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Haha, that is just to clear any confusion b/w a negative and a hyphen.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

maybe....he does have an evil intel chip....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If "-ve" was supposed to mean "negative", then a number to a negative power is not a polynomial because a number is not a variable. i.e. the base must be a variable and not a number for something to be a polynomial.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

lol.

hero (hero):

No Jim, you do

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

nope, amd...a dyslexic dam

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

1/x^2 is that a Monomial?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no, a monomial is in the form \[\LARGE cx^n\] where 'c' is any real number and n is some nonnegative integer

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

means, n is also a real number?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but 1/x^2 = x^(-2), which violates that definition

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

n is real, but more specifically (and restrictively), n is a nonnegative integer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ....

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Alright. thanks Jimmy Neutron! :D
