If you insist, but you'll need to know where that inverse makes sense; i.e., what should its domain be. And to answer that question, you'll want to know the range of the original function. And to be sure you know that range(f), you'll want to be sure you understand the domain(f).

You don't need to restrict domain to get an inverse.
