What's the lewis structure for Calcium Carbide that's CaC2..... Need to actually figure out the bond order....?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure this is right, but .. .. C ::C: .. :Ca: .. *to get the 4e- from C=8 Ca=2(times 2) so 8+4-8=4 since Ca is ionic and by hydrogen I figured it wouldn't go in the center.

let me tell u the trick to find out the bond order by calculating num of electron u can figure it out v.easily no. of electron bond order 1 0.5 2 1 3 0.5 4 0 5 0.5 6 1 7 0.5 8 0 9 0.5 10 1 11 1.5 12 2 13 2.5 14 3 15 2.5 16 2 17 1.5 18 1 19 0.5 20 0 if u notice dat there is periodicity from 1 to 8 electron and den onwards it starts increasing 0.5 till 14electron and den start decreasing till 20 eletron by 0.5 some imp. points # always start from 0.5 and remember 8th electron, it must be zero # den increase 0.5 till u came to 3(bond order) # den decreae it by 0.5 till u came to zero # 0 bond order means molecule cannot exist
