100g of water (specific heat=4.184J/g*C) and 100g of a metal sample (specific heat= 0.397J/g*C) are heated from 25C to 75C. Which substance required more thermal energy to reach 75C? (Explain your reasoning).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The specific heat explains how much energy it takes to heat up 1 gram of the substance 1 degree celsius above it's current temperature. So since water needs 4.184 J and the metal only needs 0.397 J, the answer is water.
