I got (x+2)(x-4)/(x^2+8)^2 and the critical roots are x=4, x=-2, but I need help determining the maximum and minimum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use the first derivative test ta123

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJb_Qk0O5a0 perhaps this helps... i can't wait till webcam chat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the local max at x=4 and x=-2, because I got it wrong when I input number 4 into the system

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got it wrong we I just enter it, so that not the answer the only one left are 1,2,3, and 6

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%28x-1%29%2F%28x^2%2B8%29 There you can see the graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's 1. there's i must have plugged it into a wrong equation hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what were all the test point you use and what equation did you plug in the test points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the test points have to be (x-4)(x+2) for it to be ilke this i'm just not sure how it's getting different anwer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i times by -1/1 instead of -1/-1 so that changes the signs to the x=3 to + and x=5 to negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 is the answer.... when i said -x^2+2x+8/(x^2+8)^2 and multiplied to get rid of the negative i never did it to the bottom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if I use the test point of x=3 and plug it into the (x-3)(x-4)/(x^2+8)^2 I get a negative number
