How do you you find the number of hydrogens for 2,5,6 trimethylnonane? How do you you find the number of hydrogens for 2,5,6 trimethylnonane? @Chemistry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

view the structure. Nonane- nine carbon chain without any double or triple bonds. 3 attachments (methyl groups) at carbons 2,5, and 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would that make the hydrogens CH3's?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean? hydrogens are always H's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know but the composition requires hydrogens in the structural formula so would the 2nd 5th and 6th carbons each have 3 attached hydrogen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats what a methyl group is...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of it this way: Nonane is a nine carbon chain Nine carbons* (2 hydrogens for each) + (2 hydrogens for the end carbons)= 20 hydrogens 3 methy groups replace 3 hydrogens (20-3=17) Then each methyl group has 3 hydrogens of their own (17+9=26) 26 hydrogens

thats what i thought but my chemistry homework website is telling me that its wrong ill go back and make sure i diddnt leave some infinitesimal step out thank you so much for your help and the explanation!
