A ball is thrown in the air. After t seconds, the ball is at an altitude of h(t) = 12-3(t-2)^2 feet above the ground. what is the highest altitude above the ground that the ball will reach?

That is the equation of a parabola. It's vertex is (2,12). So 12 is the highest it will reach.
if you rewrite the equation like this it might be easier y=-3(t-2)^2+12
the vertex is either the highest or lowest point meaning th elocal max or min
the equation y=a(x-s)+t s is the x value of the vertex and t is the y value of the vertex
we need to find out the y value sincethe y axis represents height/altitude
