I need someone to explain gravimetric stoichiometry to me in layman's terms. I just can't seem to understand the whole concept. -_-
Hi AD. Here is my explanation. Suppose you had a reaction, A+BC-> AB+ C. AB is a solid, C is an aqueous solution. So when you mix solution A and solBC, you get a white solid separating. Now you put this mixture through a filter paper and you are able to collect the solid. Then you dry it and weigh it. YOu have a mass. With me?
Now you know how many g of AB you weighed, So you convert that mass to moles. You know that 1 mole of AB came from 1 mole of A and 1 Mole of BC. So you know the moles of A and the moles of AB. That is it. Gravimetry is when you weigh things and stoichiometry is when you use the equation to figure out how much of something you have.
Thank you very much. It really puts it into perspective.
