10th grade. The tip our teacher gave us was to leave Hydrogens and Oxygens last. I'm just struggling at this point with the Balancing.

To balance look at everything but the hydroxide and hydrogen atoms KOH + H3PO4 -> H2O + K3PO4 Left side has 1K and right side has 3K PO4 is 1 to 1 so balance potassium first, now count the amount of hydrogen and oxygen atoms on both sides 3KOH + H3PO4 -> H2O + K3PO4 Left side 3 oxygen, 3 hydrogen, 3hydrogen = 3 oxygen + 6 hydrogen = 3 water molecules Right side 2hydrogen + 1oxygen = 1 water molecule so we need to increase the amount of molecules of water on the right side to by 3 so we have 3KOH + H3PO4 -> 3H2O + K3PO4

okay..balancing at you level is a hit and trial game.....but here are some general pointers. 1)first try to balance out all the unique/non basic element in this case Potassium and Phosphorus. 2)balance out the remaining elements in order of complexity ...i.e.complexity is the number of compounds an element is a part of in the reaction 3)very high complexity elements will generally be O,H,C,etc balance these out last!.Remember that you can add co2 or h2o to balance these elements out.
