Oh Sorry, I understood it wrong (your question) Yes, sound travels faster in water than gas, but speed of sound in water is lesser than in a solid. It's because of the arrangements of molecule, while in water; molecules are much closely placed or packed than gases.

yes, the speed of sound is faster in water than gas because in water the distance between atoms is less as compared to gas. it is easy for the vibrations created by the sound we produce to propagate through the medium(water).

Sound travels about 4-5 times as fast in water than through a gaseous medium. It depends on the temperature and the density of the water (I think there's about a 100m/s difference between sea water and fresh water, or somewhere around there), but it is still significantly faster.

if speed of sound is written as V.. and temp is written as T .,, then: V=331.4+0.6T.... it is only for air but vry helpful in explaining tat speed is directy depends upon temp. for eg... for air V= 344 at 20 degree cent. for hydrogen V = 1270 at 0 degg cent. for water vapors V= 498 at 35 degg cent. (speed in m/s)
