Could anyone put these in order according to increasing solubility? CH3–CH2–CH2–CH3 CH3–CH2–O–CH2–CH3 CH3–CH2–OH CH3–OH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solubility in what water or organic solvent???

OpenStudy (agentnao):

Water.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CH3-OH>CH3-CH2OH>CH3-CH2-O-Ch2-CH3>CH3-CH2-Ch2-CH3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is because of hydrogen bonding in alcohols and polarity. (Like dissolves like hence a polar alcohol dissolves in water which is also polar.)

OpenStudy (agentnao):

So you're saying that CH3-OH is the most soluble?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also the bigger the R group in alcohols more hydrophobic(water repelling ) it is hence CH3-Oh > C2H5Oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just write it the other way round for an increasing order :)

OpenStudy (agentnao):

Oh, okay! Thank you so much. I really need a chem tutor, but I just don't know where to find one. Thanks again though, really!
