\[\Large \frac{{5 - w}}{{w - 7}} - \frac{{4w - 9}}{{7 - w}} = \frac{{3w - 4}}{{w - 7}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

change the second fraction [(5- w) + (4w - 9)] / (w-7) or (3w -4) / (w-7) <---------- answer

OpenStudy (across):

To force common denominators, the guys changed the fraction\[-\frac{4w-9}{7-w}\]to\[\frac{4w-9}{w-7}\]by multiplying both top and bottom by -1:\[-\frac{4w-9}{7-w}=\frac{9-4w}{7-w}\cdot\frac{(-1)}{(-1)}=\frac{4w-9}{w-7}.\]

WHAT WHAT??!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

O great now i'm confused. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

she gave you an intermediate step ... we gave you the answer

OpenStudy (across):

\[\frac{{5-w}}{{w-7}}-\frac{{4w-9}}{{7-w}}\]don't have common denominators, so you can't subtract them, yet. What FSM and meverett did was rewrite the second fraction such that they have common denominators:\[\frac{{5-w}}{{w-7}}+\frac{{4w-9}}{{w-7}}.\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooo ok. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok?
