Substitute the number of years after 1950 that it is right now into the equation y = 0.50(1.06)^x. (For instance, if it is 2006, use x = 56.)

Since it's 2012 now (a late happy new year to you all) \[x=2012-1950\] thus giving us \[x=62\] This gives us the equation \[0.5(1.06)^{62}\] the answer to which is approximately 18.5. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=0.50%281.06%29^62 Hope this was what you meant.
