What is the large hadron collider for?
In their own words: "LHC [Large Hadron Collidor] - the aim of the exercise: To smash protons moving at 99.999999% of the speed of light into each other and so recreate conditions a fraction of a second after the big bang. The LHC experiments try and work out what happened."
Oh, cool! Have they succeeded?
Yes, they've successfully smashed together particles at these speeds. The analysis of the results and the experiments themselves are on-going.
So they created the effectof what a fraction of a second after the big bang would look like?
You might find this interesting. The most famous aspect of their work is the search for the Higgs Boson. But there are other experimental objectives as well: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2011/dec/13/higgs-boson-lhc-explained?INTCMP=SRCH
