If an error in transcription causes the last cytosine in an mRNA sequence that was supposed to read UUG AUC CAA UGC to be replaced with a guanine, which of the following do you predict would happen?

a. Nothing will happen since the last codon will still correspond to threonine. b. Only three amino acids will be produced instead of four. c. The first amino acid in the chain will be glycine instead of arginine. d. The last amino acid in the chain will be tryptophan instead of cysteine.

OK, these types of questions are fairly straightforward. The only thing you need to look at for now is the last triplet, which is changed from UGC to UGG. Now, since your table has U instead of T, it's already in mRNA rather than DNA, so there's no need to translate (you should be safe from this kind of thing if you're in a high school class, but my university genetics professor once tried this). That's good. So then you just look at the table. Find the U on the left and the G on the top. This box then contains the four possible UG_ combinations. (The last letter is on the right, but it's just as easy to just look in the box.) Since UGC corresponds to cysteine, and UGG to trytophan, you're answer would be...

d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are u there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D
