Cobalt & Oxygen... A covalent compound or an Ionic compound?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you mean what kind of bond forms between them? It would be an ionic bond in the form of Cobalt(II) oxide (cobaltous oxide) - CoO, Cobalt(III) oxide (cobaltic oxide) and Co2O3 Cobalt(II,III) oxide - Co3O4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ionic compound is form by metal and non metal particles bond and become cation(metal, positive) and anion(negative, non metal). Covalent compound is only consist of non metal particles bond like Co2, O2...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its predominantly ionic. (The bond does have covalent character but it is predominantly ionic). Do you know Fajan's rule?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

the percentage of ionic character of Co -O calculated is about 45.6 which indicates it is in between that of ionic and co valency!!!! u cant tell the bond types in all compounds some compounds show pure ionic bond some show pure co valency but there are some compounds whose bonding lies between that of ionic and co valency !!!! u can calculate using this equation percentage of ionic character of M-O= [1-\exp[-(Xm-Xo)^{?}/4]*100\]

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

there fore the bondage for cobalt - oxygen is in between the ionic and covalency!!!

Wow I didn't know that! Learning stuff new everyday :)
