which of the following have dipole-moment greater than that of propanal? explain. acetone , butanone, acrolein, acetophenone, ethyl chloride, ethanal, methanal, mesityl oxide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think ethanal, methanal are more. This is because partial positive on carbonyl carbon is less because CH3CH2CH2 has more +I than ethyl which is more than methyl. More +ve charge more dipole.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer key had 5 of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is mesityl oxide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm actually not sure of the two i've written either, you should consult somebody else.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

acetophenone also will have more i think as Ph donated electrons through resonance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4-methylpent-3-en-2-one is mesityl oxide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This would also be more than propanal as there is resonance which increases dipole(It makes Oxygen negative increasing dipole)
