So we could take the cube root of -16, but thats an ugly number, and we cant take the square root of a negative number so it has to remain under there. The cube root of a cubed is a. for example cube 2 to get 8, the cube root of 8 is 2. so we take a out from under the radical and we have a * cuberoot(-16b^8)
