How does temperature affect solubility?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

temperature is directly proportional to solubitlity as high temp breaks bonds and substance dissolve

OpenStudy (jfraser):

usually that's true, but there are some solids that become less soluble as temperature increases. Gases also drop in solubility with increased temp. That's why soda goes flat when it gets wram.

new thing for me :)

It depends on the nature of the substance! the system in this case follows LE-Chatlier principle where, when the temperature increases, then the system tries to revert back its effect by stopping all the exothermic reactions and favouring endothermic ones. The solvation of say a gas (most usually exothermic) will favour desolvation.
