Given the nuclear equation: 235 1 142 91 1 U + n --> Ba + Kr + 3 n + energy 92 0 56 36 0 State the type of nuclear reaction represented by the equation.

This one sounds so hard PLEASE HELP ANYONE! :(

OpenStudy (jfraser):

You've got 1 large particle being split by a subatomic particle (the neutron) into larger fragments and more neutrons. This isn't one of the decay types, and it's not fusion. If those neutrons hit more U-235 atoms, the reaction will continue and get larger and larger, forming a chain reaction.

Wait so its fission right?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

yes

The sum of the masses of the products is slightly less than the sum of the masses of the reactants. Explain this loss of mass. I don't get how it lost the mass?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The loss in mass is the mass defect. The loss in mass is the energy released. E=mc^2. If mass is not lost energy can't be released.
