What is the electron configuration for the first excited state of Argon?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Electron configuration [Ne] 3s2 3p6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

saratchandra:Thats ground state. First excited state is [Ne} 3s2 3p5 4s1

OpenStudy (wondermath):

im confused. usually u take the electron from the lowest energy shell, so how come you don't take it from 3s2? :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you take it from the highest energy state in the valence shell.(Otherwise ou would remove 1s for all)

OpenStudy (wondermath):

oh okay thanks!!
