Electron stability question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As this is more of a physical chemistry question, I've posted it here. Why is a 'full shell of electrons' stable? (I am familiar with electron orbitals) With 1s 2s 1p(5) (ie- 1 electron short of a 'full outer shell'), why is there an energy drop with an extra electron added? I was told that it was something to do with their magnetic fields overlapping, but it wasn't very clear.
