Two air track carts move along an air track towards each other. Cart A has a mass of 440 g and moves towards the right with a speed of 1.59 m/s and Cart B has a mass of 295 g and moves towards the left with a speed of 1.08 m/s. What is the magnitude of the total momentum of the system?

OpenStudy (mani_jha):

First convert the masses into kilograms. 440 g = 0.44 kg 295 g =0.295 kg Momentum of A = mass*velocity 0.44*1.59 Momentum of B=mass*velocity =0.295*1.08 Just add these two to get the total momentum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this correct? ((0.44)(1.59))+((0.295)(1.08)) ? I get the answer 1.02 kg m/s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind, missed the negative. i got the right answer of ).381 kg m/s
