if one solution has 100 times as many hydrogen ions as another solution, what is the difference, in pH units between the two solution?

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

i'm preeetty sure this is chemistry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, chemistry. But since the pH scale is logarithmic (that is, the difference between each notch on the scale is 10 times the number of hydrogen ions), then your solutions must be two units apart: 1 unit apart: 10 times as many H ions 2 units apart: 100 times as many 3 units apart: 1000 times as many and so on. Hope that helped!

2 10^2= 100 and pH is neagtive log to the base 10
