what is the difference between conductivity of metal and ionic substances?

In a metal, the electrons are delocalised, meaning they are free to flow (which means they can conduct electricity. In ionic solutions, however, the electrons are not free to move, so the only charges that really move are the ions themselves through the solution. This movement of charge allows for ionic solutions to conduct electricity.
