why doesnot charge reside inside a hollow container

Take a Gaussian surface inside the hollow container,Since electric field is 0,charge is 0.

charge can always be put inside a hollow conductor.it just cant stay at the inner surface.all the charge on a conductor's surface are free to move around(by def. of conductors).so to attain equilibrium they push each other and end up making the outer surface take up all the charge..it is so because its the most stable equilibrium that they can attain i.e. with least potential energy..

For a spherical conductor: If excess charge is placed on a spherical shell that is made of conducting material, the excess charge spreads uniformly over the (external) surface. For example, if we place excess electrons on a spherical metal shell, those electrons repel each other and tend to move apart, spreading over the available surface until they are uniformly distributed. That arrangement maximizes the distances b/w all pairs of the excess electrons. According to the first shell theorem (a shell of uniform charge attracts or repel a charged particle that is outside the shell as if all the shell's charge were concentrated at its center), the shell then will attract or repel an external charge as if all the excess charge on the shell were concentrated at its center.
