Explain the trend in the reactivity of the Group 1 elements.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

as you move down Group I, the atoms' valence levels get farther and farther away, so the atoms get larger and larger. Since the valence electron sits farther and farther away from the nucleus, it gets easier and easier to remove it. Ionization energy decreases as you move down the Group for this exact reason. The reactivity is tied into the ionization energy. Since IE gets lower as you move down Group I, the atoms at the bottom will lose their single valence electron easier than the atoms at the top of the group and the atoms at the bottom of the group become more reactive than atoms at the top of the group.
