When reactive non-meatls react, they are said to become like noble gases. (i) Explain what this statement means. (ii) What can you conclude about the reactivity of Group 7 ions?
We know that group 7 elements have 7 electrons. We know that elements almost always(99% of the time) try to form an octet(8) electrons around each atom in the molecule being observed because it is the most stable. For example fluorine is incredibly reactive, so much so it will burn almost any substance it comes into contact with because it really wants that last electron so it rips it off other things. Ions like fluorine, chlorine and bromine are highly reactive because they have higher electronegativities due to the amount of electrons they have and the size. Group 7 ions are highly reactive and when they obtain the electron from another element they become similar to noble gasses because they have a full octet.
