-9i(13+2i) = ?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

-117i -18i^2 = -117i + 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from the -117i-18^2 how u get it to = -117i + 18 ?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

What does i equal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm ?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Well your problem says -9i(13+2i). My question to you is what is i ?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

if you are not working in complex numbers where i^2 = -1 then -9i(13 + 2i) = -117i - 18i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but isn't -9i x 2i = -18i^2 ?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yes it is. What is i ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

imaginary number ?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Which imaginary number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-18 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get what your asking =.=

OpenStudy (mertsj):

That's why you are having trouble with this problem.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[i=\sqrt{-1}\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Therefore: \[i^2=(\sqrt{-1})^2=-1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh i see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-18(-1) = 18

OpenStudy (mertsj):

And \[18i^2=18(-1)=-18\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

And \[-18i^2=-18(-1)=18\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got it, thanks @Mertsj :D

OpenStudy (mertsj):
