How would I figure out electron affinity? The electron affinity for an oxygen atom is negative. What statement is probably true regarding the second electron affinity for oxygen?

sam (.sam.):

Electron affinity of an atom or molecule is defined as the amount of energy released when an electron is added to a neutral atom or molecule to form a negative ion. Electron affinity also 'can be said by' the reverse of ionisation energy, Example of electron affinity is, \[Cl +e^- \rightarrow Cl^-\]

sam (.sam.):

From your question, the second IE of oxygen will be, \[O^-+e^-\rightarrow O^{2-}\]

The answer is more positive, however.

sam (.sam.):

More positive will be Ionisation energy, as ionisation energy is defined as "energy required to remove an electron" So, atoms with ionisation energy tends to remove electrons and getting more positive
