In a national chess tournament, 40% of the players are eliminated each day. If the tournament starts with 2,000 players, to the nearest integer, how many players will be present at the start of the 5th day of play?

to reduce a number by 40% multiply by \(0.6\) because if you have 40% less you have 60% of what you started with
so your job is to multiply by \(.6\) 5 times in a row, more easily written as multiply by \(.6^5\)
hmn. At end of day t, population is 2000*(0.6^t). At start of day five, there are the same number as at the end of day four, so 2000*(0.6^4)
scratch that, beginning of fifth day i guess it would be \(2000\times .6^4\)
