OpenStudy (anonymous):

Allie has a birthday present for her brother. The length of the box that the present comes in is two times longer than the width of the box. The height of the box is 5 inches and its volume is 160 cubic inches. What is the length and width of the box?

OpenStudy (blockcolder):

Let L, W, H be the length, width, and height of the box. Therefore, L=2W and H=5. Since the volume is LWH, we have \(160=(2W)(W)(5)\). Then solve for W then L.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you give me a little more:)

OpenStudy (blockcolder):

Okay. :D \[160=10W^2\\ 16=W^2\\ W=\pm4\] Now obviously, we can't have a negative width, so W=4. Since W=4, L=2(4)=8. There you go. :)
