What does the dehydration of methanol yield?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pure methanol you drain water out so you have pure CH3OH. if i got right what you mean from your question...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. Like the dehydration of ethanol yields ethene and water. Is dehydration of methanol possible?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

you need 2 methanol molecules, but it can be done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are the products?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

you get dimethyl ether and water \[CH_3OH + CH_3OH \rightarrow H_2O + CH_3OCH_3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay! Thank you! And is decomposition different from dehydration?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

yes, because this isn't technically a decomposition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would decomposition of methanol yield different products?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

yes. decomp of methanol could yield carbon and water, or carbon monoxide and hydrogen. offhand i don't know which is favorable though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uh! Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hydrocarbons only undergo combustion.
