A mixture of 10 cm3 of methane and 10 cm3 of ethane was sparked with an excess of oxygen. After cooling to room temperature, thr residual gas was passed through aqueous potassium hydroxide. What volume of gas was absorbed by the alkali?. (need the and with working quick)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

V(absorbed gas) = 30,3 cm3

Can u elaborate It ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of course, methane and ethane combust with oxygen and create CO2 and H2O where CO2 which is created is put in solution of potassium hydroxide there comes to reaction of creating potassium carbonate do you need more elaboration?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thnx!!! But can u show the working of how u got 30 cm3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one mole of methane gives one mole of Co2 where as one mole of ethane gives 2 moles of co2 Total 3 moles initial volume was 10cm3 so CO2 obtained was 30cm3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes hashsam1 you did it simplified but your logic is correct

Thnx the image was really hepfull. I understood it.
