Name the compound represented by each of the following structural formulas. Attachment is coming.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. pentane since there are 5 carbons b. 3-methylpentane c. 2,5-dimethylhexane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just a bit of an explanation: a. is just a straight chain containing 5 carbons b. a straight chain of 5 carbons (pentane) with a methyl (CH3) group as a side chain off the third carbon c. the longest chain consists of 6 carbons (hexane) and on carbon 2 and 5, each have a methyl as a side chain and the prefix "di" describes the existence of two methyl side chains

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh thanks, so d. is 4,5- Methyl?...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d? I don't see a question d. Only a, b, c.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, if there were a methyl on carbons 4 and 5, it would be dimethyl. It's important not to forget that!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then 2,3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2,3 - dimethyl butane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep! Got the hang of it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes now i do, thanks.
