a. pentane since there are 5 carbons
b. 3-methylpentane
c. 2,5-dimethylhexane
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Just a bit of an explanation:
a. is just a straight chain containing 5 carbons
b. a straight chain of 5 carbons (pentane) with a methyl (CH3) group as a side chain off the third carbon
c. the longest chain consists of 6 carbons (hexane) and on carbon 2 and 5, each have a methyl as a side chain and the prefix "di" describes the existence of two methyl side chains

oh thanks, so d. is 4,5- Methyl?...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
d? I don't see a question d. Only a, b, c.

Also, if there were a methyl on carbons 4 and 5, it would be dimethyl. It's important not to forget that!
