What is the difference between impulse and impulsive force? Explain.

An impulse is defined as the change in momentum of the object,whereas an impulsive force is a relative term,used to define a relatively large amount of force on a small object. Remember,Impulsive force is relative.

I think there are many misconceptions about this lying around.People think an impulsive force is a different kind of force.Below is an explanation from a site i just looked into: The Effect of Time on an impulsive Force 1. From the formula for impulsive force, we get Ft = mv – mu F = (mv - mu) / t This shows that the time of action is very important factor in the calculation of the impulsive force. 2.When the time of action is prolonged, the impulsive force will decrease. 3. On the other hand, if the time of action is shortened, the impulsive force will increase. See? These points are true for all the forces in the universe :)

:). Let me give another definition of Impulsive force: Impulsive force is the rate of change in linear momentum F = \[F = dp/dt\] While Impulse is the difference of momentums \[J = p _{final}-p _{initial}\]

In classical mechanics, an impulse (abbreviated I or J) is defined as the integral of a force with respect to time. When a force is applied to a rigid body it changes the momentum of that body. A small force applied for a long time can produce the same momentum change as a large force applied briefly, because it is the product of the force and the time for which it is applied that is important. The impulse is always equal to the change of momentum.\[I=\int\limits_{t1}^{t2}F dt\]where F is the force applied from t1 to t2. Impulsive force is a force which acts on an object for a very short interval during a collision or explosion. It is equals to the change in momentum per unit time.
