I have given this answer! go to this: http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100103215500AAXiQKm A compound is formed by the sharing of or transfer of electrons. To form pentahalide non covalently 5 electrons would have to be transferred. It is easier to share 5 electrons than transferring them.In trihalides only 3 electrons are involved so it has higher ionic character.
