A security light is being installed outside a loading dock. The light is mounted 20 feet above the ground and must be placed at a 55° angle so that it illuminates a parking lot. What is the distance from the end of the parking lot to the loading dock? (Will post picture momentarily)

You want to find the opposite side (of the angle of 55 degrees), Since tan(angle) = opposite/adjacent This means tan(55) = x/20 Solve this equation for x to find your answer.

Remember to make sure you're in degree mode

how do you solve for x?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tan(55) = x/20 20*tan(55) = x x = 20*tan(55) x = 20*1.428148 x = 28.56296 So the answer is approximately 28.56296 feet
